Club Championship Night

Enter as a team (any combination of men or women age 14 and older). Individuals are encouraged to add their name to the signup sheet. Teams are always looking for players or spares.

Monday and Tuesday night is Club Championship Night!  To start the season, teams are seeded into flights. Teams then play a round robin within their flight and points are awarded for wins and losses. The points accumulated in the first draw provide the seedings of flights for the second draw round robin and then similarly for the third draw round robin. This system ensures that you are playing against other curlers of equal skill and keeps games completive and fun. At the conclusion of the third round robin, teams are then designated by points into the Club Championship playoffs in one of the following categories Club Champion, A Flight Champion, B Flight Champion, C Flight Champion and D Flight Champion.

Games are played Monday or Tuesday night at 6:30. Teams will generally play a mix of the two nights but every effort will be made to accommodate any team that is only available one of the nights. Enjoy the challenge, rewards and the camaraderie with your fellow Club Champions.

Tuesday Day Ladies

Enter as an individual (ladies of all ages and abilities are encouraged to join one or both leagues).

For all the women out there that might be looking for great fun and socialization this league is the perfect fit for you. With the emphasis on FUN you will meet other women who have just started curling or have been enjoying the sport for years. No matter your skill level we are sure you will find everyone quite friendly, helpful and supportive.

To start the season experienced league skips select their team in a player draft. Teams then play for the next 7 weeks in a round robin. This is not a competitive league but the top two teams are recognized for their standing. Skips will then draft a completely new team and again play a 7 week round robin. Again the top two teams are recognized for their standing.  And then it is done again!

After each game, teams are responsible for coffee and treats on a rotation basis. What's not to love about this opportunity; laughs, social time, a bit of exercise all in the span of a couple of hours!

The Tuesday Day Ladies are run at 12:30pm. It’s an ideal chance to get out and away from your daily routine and spend some time laughing and enjoy some exercise.

Wednesday Coffee League

Enter as an individual. Teams are made up from those present that week.

Regardless of your age we have a very active group on Wednesday afternoons. A relaxed, informal yet spirited afternoon will have you looking forward to the following week to enjoy the camaraderie of this group.

It’s not so much about your skill level as it is about enjoying the sport and fellow curlers for an afternoon of fun. As you hear the skips yell SWEEP HARD (you probably won’t) you will appreciate the gamesmanship that is present! No matter your age we all like to compete and come up on the winning team.

After all this enthusiastic sweeping enjoy a great social time in the lounge upstairs having a coffee, tea or hot chocolate and if I am not mistaken a few goodies.

There is an $8.00 (taxes included) per game playing fee. The games begin at 1:00 pm. So please join us as we sweep away our worries for a few hours and have lots of laughs.

Wednesday Night Mixed

Enter as an individual (men and women age 14 and older).

This league is for:

a) those who want to meet and play with or against everyone in the league,

b) those who wish to have fun and be semi competitive, and

c) new curlers who will be teamed with experienced curlers and have the opportunity to learn as they play.

To start the season experienced league skips select their team in a player draft. Teams then play for the next 7 weeks in a round robin. Skips must then draft a completely new team and again play a 7 week round robin. And then they do it again! Players are awarded points every game on wins, losses, ends won and the team score. At year end the Wednesday Night Mixed Fight Championships are held with teams determined by the points awarded to the players throughout the year (note: everyone made the playoffs last year).

Within the year curlers should have met and played with or against everyone in the league. While the emphasis is on having fun, this league has a competitive edge that can prepare curlers, should they wish, to compete at a higher level.

Game time is 6:30 pm. It’s a great night to get together have fun and play the game. And there’s a bit of camaraderie in our licensed lounge after the game.

Thursday Night Industrial

Enter as a team (any combination of men or women age 14 and older). Individuals are encouraged to add their name to the signup sheet. Teams are always looking for players or spares.

Thursday night is a very social and fun night of curling. Enter your team of friends, co-workers or family. The level of experience ranges from beginners to seasoned veterans of the game. So there is a spot for everyone no matter your skill level.

The league is divided into “four pools” based on the previous year’s standings with new teams being added to the fourth pool. Throughout the season teams are shuffled revising the pools based on results, ensuring teams are matched appropriately. This format keeps the curling both competitive and fun! At season end, playoffs build up to the “Championship Saturday” finals followed by a very entertaining banquet and awards.

There are two draws on Thursday Nights at 5:45 and 8:00 pm. Teams will generally play a mix of the two timeslots. Be prepared to have fun curling and in the lounge afterward. And be sure not to miss the Christmas event the last Thursday before the holidays.

Friday Morning Senior Men

Enter as an individual. You may request to play with certain members from our Club.

It’s not so much about your age or skill level as it is about enjoying the sport and the company of fellow curlers for a morning of fun. No one (maybe just one or two) remembers their win/loss record from week to week.

This league is unique in that teams are entered from the four area curling clubs (Welland, Niagara Falls, St Catharines and Grantham Curling Clubs). Each week the league rotates between each of the clubs providing the opportunity to not only play against curlers from other clubs, but to also experience play in other area clubs.

The league plays Friday mornings at 9:30 in one of the designated Niagara clubs. Here’s your chance to meet curlers from other clubs and experience their venues.

There is a $5.00 (taxes included) per game playing fee.

Rocking Twilight Sundays

Enter together with close friends or family or as an individual.

If you are concerned with wins and losses, THIS IS NOT THE LEAGUE FOR YOU. If you want to have fun, be with friends or family, have a date night, meet new people and experience the game of curling, then this is the league for you.

Rocking Twilight Sundays is a very social and relaxed late afternoon of curling. Teams are organized each week. You may choose to play with your friends, spouse, date, family or rotate with other league members. Playing only 6 ends compared to the normal 8 gives newcomers to the sport a chance to experience the game without competition.

There is one draw Sunday at 4:30 pm. Curling is finished no later than 6:00 pm. This gives everyone a chance to go upstairs to the lounge to enjoy a drink and reminisce on the shots made and almost made.

So come on out and give us a try for a night out of fun and curling.

For further information about this league please contact Theresa Brooks

Sunday Scotch Doubles

Enter as an individual or your team of 2 (teams do not have to be mixed).

Scotch Doubles is played with only 2 players per team, throwing 3 rocks each. Give it a try if you are:

  1. a) Interested in trying out the newest “craze” in curling (an official Olympic sport in 2018).
  2. b) Improving your skills as an individual, or
  3. c) Looking for another opportunity to get out on the ice.

With it being new to the Welland Curling Club this year, the first week will be an introductory session to ensure everyone understands the rules followed by a fun match. This will be followed by a 6-week round robin.  Future draws will be added if the interest continues.  This new curling discipline should make for some interesting competition as everyone will be learning some new skills and should find themselves on a fairly even playing field.

There is one draw Sunday at 4:30 pm. Curling is finished no later than 6:00 pm. This gives everyone a chance to go upstairs to the lounge to enjoy a drink and reminisce on this new twist to curling.

So, come on out and give it a try. Curling is always fun but now there is something new. For Unlimited Members play is included in your membership. For all other WCC membership categories there is a $15.00 (HST included fee) per game sparing fee.

For further information about this league please contact Keri McQuiggan.

Junior League Program

The Welland Curling Club’s Junior Program offers a vibrant and welcoming afternoon of fun and instruction for both boys and girls age 6 to 19.

Scheduled on Sunday afternoons from 1:00 to 3:00 pm, Juniors are provided an introduction to the game, the opportunity to meet new people and most of all, have fun. The curling is recreational but competition is available. Many of our juniors have advanced through the ranks and have competed in various competitions with great success.

There is something for everyone. To ensure players are at similar skill levels the program is divided into four leagues:

  1. a) Little Rockers ages 6 to 8,
  2. b) Pre-Bantam League ages 9 to 12,
  3. c) Youth League ages 13 to 19, and
  4. d) Secondary School League.

Qualified instructors are on ice during the 2 hours the league is in play to help players learn the basics, the strategy of the game, keeping the curlers focused and most important providing encouragement with the enthusiasm the game inspires.

After the instruction and games are finished, the curlers head upstairs to the Club’s lounge to enjoy hot chocolate that has been prepared by a group of volunteer parents. These volunteers along with the subsidized support of the Club keeps the costs of the Junior program very low and accessible hopefully to all.
